A large percentage of the clients who seek out consultation in my private practice do so without any knowledge of my theoretical grounding in Bowen family systems theory. Most come with fairly vague ideas about how one thinks about human functioning. Most ideas seem to be either derived from popular psychological writings or a mixture of ideas derived from courses in psychology or the media. Clients’ encounters with a therapist utilizing Bowen family systems theory can be jarring, disconcerting, interesting, useful, or all of the above. This Clinical Conference will present material that explores these responses as well as two clinical tapes of clients’ experiences.
