“The goal is to make a research project out of life” (Bowen, 1978 p. 179). Interviews with people who have particularly challenging family histories will illustrate the benefits of family research and contact with extended family for improving health and functioning. The discussion will address common concerns, including how a therapist engages people, the importance of contact with extended family and family research, and how a therapist can recognize and address the challenges involved.
