Roberta Gilbert, MD
Dr. Gilbert is a psychiatrist whose primary interest is Bowen family systems theory and its extensions and applications for individuals, families, and organizations.
Dr. Gilbert completed medical school at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York in 1962.
She has been on the faculty of the Georgetown Family Center since 1988, has served as
its medical director, and supervises in the Postgraduate Training Program.
She was on the Editorial Board of Family Systems from 1993 to 1998 and now serves as
an editorial consultant.
In addition to her psychiatric practice in Falls Church, Virginia, Dr. Gilbert
providing leadership training for pastors and managers. She frequently presents training days and
lectures for therapists as well as academic papers, community talks and workshops both in the
Washington, DC area and across the United States.
Dr. Gilberts book Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interaction,
published in 1992, has received wide distribution. It is based on the principles of Bowen
family systems theory and applies theory to all kinds of relationships, including those of
the family, the workplace, and other organizations. Her book, Connecting with Our Children:
Guiding Principles for Parents in Troubled Times was published by Wiley and Sons in 1999.
It is an application of the principles of Bowen family systems theory for parents as they
struggle with rearing children in times of societal regression.
Dr. Gilberts most recent book The Eight Concepts of
Bowen Theory is a succinct summary of Bowen family systems theory with
special applications for therapists or coaches and those in positions of
leadership. Currently Dr. Gilbert is involved in a research project titled
Evaluating the Results of Training in Bowen Theory.
