Family Matters is a series of half-hour TV shows produced by the Bowen Center for the University of the District of Columbia since 2006. To see a full list of topics and watch Family Matters episodes, please view the playlists on The Bowen Center's YouTube page and select Family Matters.

The format is a one-on-one interview designed to bring out the best and most in-depth observations of professionals with expertise in Bowen family systems theory who have spent their careers learning about issues that matter to families.

Family Matters offers useful insights for personal growth through learning about practical applications of the theory. It also serves as a teaching resource for programs on family systems, as each show captures essential elements of Bowen theory.

The program seeks to support the mission of the Bowen Center by assisting families in solving major life problems through understanding and improving human relationships and by supporting the adult programming strategy of UDC-TV.

As the faculty representative of the Bowen Center, Dr. Roberta Holt conceived and developed the program, inviting guests with expertise on a wide variety of topics of interest to families. Dr. Holt hosted the show’s first three seasons. Allen Blakey, a former member of the Center’s advisory board with professional expertise in communications and public relations, served as host 2009-2011. Dr. Mariana Martinez, a psychologist on the faculty of the Bowen Center, was host 2011-2018. Kathleen Smith, PhD, LPC, a licensed professional counselor and writer on the Bowen Center faculty, now hosts the series.

Ed Jones, the general manager of UDC-TV continues in his invaluable role as the show’s producer. Since its inception, he has dedicated himself to bringing the show to the air and ensuring its quality and visibility.
