Ethical Dilemmas in Clinical Practice

This conference will identify common ethical dilemmas of confidentiality, dual relationship and reporting in clinical practice and in work settings. Participants will consider ethics through the lens of Bowen theory and be provided opportunity to develop practical strategies for thinking about ethical dilemmas.

Ethical decision-making frameworks are tools in clinical practice but often fail to address the anxiety felt in ethical conflicts or challenging situations. This presentation will consider how Bowen theory provides a useful way of thinking.

This lecture/discussion will explore ethical dilemmas, particularly confidentiality, that consultants face who see families or multiple family members. The discussion also explores the ethical conundrums that one faces when one is coaching a family member to define a self when other family members develop symptoms.

As the intrepid family counselor seeks to conceptualize the family as the organism for treatment, the choice of valid assessment practices makes a difference. In this presentation, I will explore how the therapist can use the family diagram and the Systems Model for Family Assessment (SMFA) in accordance with Section E of the American Counseling Association’s 2014 Code of Ethics. Ethical benefits of a principled family systems view are highlighted.

The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family/Georgetown Family Center is authorized by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners and the District of Columbia Board of Social Work to provide continuing education credit. This program is a Category I offering.

The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family/Georgetown Family Center has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6225. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family/Georgetown Family Center is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

The conference day provides a maximum of 4 hours of Category I continuing education credit for social workers and for counselors. Registrants must attend livestreamed conferences to receive the continuing education credit. We do not offer continuing education credit for viewing the class recordings.

If you plan to participate in the CEU/CE process, it is necessary to:

  • Pay the CEU/CE fee of $15 prior to the start of the conference.

  • Attend the entire livestreamed conference.

  • Enable video so that you are visible throughout the entirety of the conference (except during designated breaks or lunch).

  • Submit a completed evaluation.

  • Identify at least three deviations in the standard of care regarding the general conduct of a clinician.

  • Articulate ethical standard of confidentiality and provide 3 examples of how standard is challenged.
