John Engels

John Engels is the founder of Leadership Coaching Inc, a twenty-five-year consortium of business-owning executive coaches who share a specialized background in the application of Bowen family systems theory to organizations.

Mr. Engels’ teaching, writing, and coaching combine real-life leadership challenges, self-exposing reflections, and penetrating questions informed by Bowen family systems theory.  His work has been influenced by forty years of interactions with indigenous and spiritual leaders, cross-cultural village elders, Attica Prison inmates, animal biologists, law enforcement chiefs, military combat leaders, education and government administrators, and thousands of business clients. He has been an invited resource for the Family Business Alliance, Young Presidents Organization, Vistage, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the American University of Beirut, the Japan Family Center, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in Dublin, the Gandhi Institute, Cornell University, and hundreds of other organizations.

John has attended and presented at Bowen Center conferences since 1994 and has written a chapter in Bringing Bowen Theory to Life, published in 2010. His monthly blogs feature applications of Bowen theory to business and family challenges, reaching 10,000 leaders every month.

John is a Scholar-Practitioner for Cornell University’s Smith Family Business Initiative, assisting business-owning families and their advisors as they navigate relationship challenges, advance succession conversations, and develop next-generation leaders.
